The Prince of Wales visited Palmerston North in May of 1920, he was accompanied by Lord Louis Mountbatten. According to the news coverage of the event, there were huge crowds cheering the visitor along the route from the station to the Square. Addresses were presented by the Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P.) on-behalf of the borough, and Mr. J. Linklater (chairman of the Kairanga County' Council) on behalf of the ratepayers of that body. Rangitāne representatives also presented an address of loyalty. Afterwards, the Prince inspected returned soldiers and nurses, and drove around the Square, cheered by the school children and the people.
