This image was published by the Evening Standard on Monday 5th of January 1981. It depicts the New Zealand Women’s Under-23 Cricket team – the selection of which was announced in Palmerston North on the Saturday.
The caption read: “The New Zealand under-23 women's cricket team, chosen for a tour of Australia at the end of this week. From left to right: Back row: Delwyn Costello (Canterbury), Shona Gilchrist (Auckland), Rosemary Signal (Central Districts), Ingrid Jagersma (North Shore), Elizabeth Signal (Central Districts), Sheree Harris (Canterbury), Gail Tipa (Otago), Nicki Turner (Canterbury), Christine Marshall (Auckland). Front row: Christine Leighton (Central Districts), Debbie Hockley (Canterbury, capt), Pat McKelvey (manageress), Jan Hall (vice-captain, Otago), Heather Shale (Auckland).”
A small article by David Ogilvie read: “There were no surprises when the New Zealand under-23 women's cricket team was named for an Australian tour in Palmerston North on Saturday night. Most of the form players of the present Hallyburton-Johnston women's national tournament are there. The tour starts in Perth almost immediately after the tournament and ends in Melbourne at the end of the month.”
“Manawatu has three players in the team. The Signal sisters and Leighton, the latter being a new representative. Leighton has been a top opening bowler in the past three seasons, and her batting has developed pleasingly this season.”
