Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. Prime Minister Michael Joseph Savage (1872-1940) died in office 27 March 1940. His body was transported over two days by train to Auckland for burial. It stopped in Palmerston North for 55 minutes on March 30th. At the station, the mortuary van was opened on both sides for people to pay their respects, and then remained opened as the train slowly drew through Te Marae o Hine/The Square, stopping briefly near the band rotunda, before continuing along Main Street East.
