“Lions Cash Helps Samaritans”
- Description
-
This image was published in the August 27th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper with the caption: “Mr D. Dewar, chairman of the Middle Districts' Lions Club's community welfare committee, presents the cheque to the chairman of Samaritans, Mr B. Meredith”
The short article read: “The Middle Districts Lions Club has presented the Manawatu branch of the Samaritans with a cheque for $250, so it can buy a new Answerphone for their service.
The Samaritans offer a 24-hour emergency service to Palmerston North - in fact the whole of the Manawatu district - from their office in Amesbury Street. Their unique befriending service is available to those in distress, to talk about any problem that worries them, at any time of the day or night. Volunteers man the centre daily from 9.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m. After that, until 9.00 a.m., an answerphone operates, giving the caller another number to phone for personal help.
During the year ended May 30, 1978, one person in every 30 Palmerston North people contacted Samaritans daily. Samaritans are ready to receive calls from people with every sort of human problem, and they offer to listen, understand and help dispel their callers' loneliness.”
