St Joseph's High School Pupils, 1958
- Description
St. Joseph's was a girls' school which stood where (as of 2014) the Metlife retirement and hospital complex is located in Fitchett Street, with the entrance at the corner of Grey Street. The teachers at St. Joseph's were nuns from the order of Our Lady of Mercy. They lived in the Convent of Mercy across the road from the school - which was housed in the same building as the earlier Elizabeth von Blaramberg School. The lease on the school sire ran out in the 1980s and St. Joseph's School and the boys' Marist School (further along Fitchett Street) were incorporated into the current St. Peter's co-ed high school. The Convent was demolished circa 1985. The convent grounds provided the setting for this photograph - in front of a statue of the Virgin Mary. The convent held fundraising garden parties in the grounds each year.
