“Takaro Health Scheme ‘A Trailblazer’”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the May 28th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption “Mr Gregory and Mrs Hills with their ‘trailblazer’”
An excerpt from the article read “A 'trailblazing' experiment in health care for children of Palmerston North's Takarо School is likely to be followed by a system of improved healthcare at schools throughout New Zealand. The Takaro experiment in community. co-operation began last year, but the event was shrouded under publicity blackout. Its organisers felt that this could have killed the project before it has a chance to prove itself and its worth to the school. However, surrounding the project was broken last week, when the Tribune was invited to attend a meeting of the Manawatu Branch of the Zonta Club on Tuesday. The club was mainly responsible for financing the health scheme of the school, and the meeting was held to hear the school's principal, Mr Ken Gregory, and the school's community volunteer nurse, Mrs Lois Hills, talk about the success of the scheme and the type of work it entailed. Mr Gregory said the plan was fraught with difficulties one of the greatest which was publicity. "If a story had hit the headlines alon g the lines of 'Takaro's health problems being so bad that a special nurse needed', at the time we were trying to put our point across, the whole scheme would have been torpedoed," he said.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
