This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 15 May 1961 "New Zealand's oldest competing axeman, 60-year-old Bert Oliver (right), is seen at the axemen's carnival at the Industries Fair with "a young" apprentice, 47-year-old R. (Bob) Wheeler, who has been competing for 30 years. Recently Mr. Wheeler's 15-year-old son won his first competition chop with his father's axe. Mr. Wheeler is well known for his ability with the cross-cut saw. Mr. Oliver has competed in Australian and New Zealand axemen's events since 1924, holding many records that are unbroken today."
