This image was taken for a series published in the Manawatu Evening Standard on 28 March 1978 with the caption, "The Manawatu Flea Market's opening day at the Self Help Carpark on the corner of Broadway and Albert Street attracted about 100 last Saturday. By 11 am, the owners of 17 cars bedecked with everything from clothing to a $1000 drum kit were doing good business. Two cars selling clothing left after 45 minutes, sold out. Stall holders paid $4 each to display their wares. The two city women who will be operating the venture each Saturday morning - Mrs Pauline Boggs and Mrs Mary Broughtwood - were more than satisfied with Saturday's crowd."
