These images were taken for the September 17th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published.
The short article read: “A mechanical digger bites deep into Featherston Street, as the next stage of a new $1 million sewer line between the city's treatment station at Maxwell's Line and Belfast Place goes ahead. The sewer is replacing sewerage pipes, laid befoe [sic] the turn of the century, the city's engineer, Mr G. W. N. Johansen, told the "Tribune". It’s expected that the line will be finished by Easter 1979.The sewer has already progressed along the western side of Featherston Street, and work has just started on the eastern side of Rangitikei Street. As the line has progressed along Featherston Street the road has been progressively improved above it, he said. The ‘new’ road now stretches from Botanical Road to Bourke Street. The road between Bourke Street and Rangitikei Street is being widened. Once the shoulders of the road have been strengthened and a levelling coat applied in the surface's worst areas, new seal will be applied and the road brought up to the standard that now exists between Botanical Road and Bourke Street, he said.
The road does not need to be reconstructed, because its foundations are good, he added. However, because of the probable delay in getting a National Roads Board subsidy for the road improvement on the eastern side of Rangitikei Street, the sewer trench might just have to be filled and temporary seal applied over it until the extra money comes through. He had no idea when that might be.”
