“Public Mislead By ‘Pipedream’”
- Description
-
This image was published in the April 30th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper with the caption “The Lido: the great debate is over.”
An excerpt from the article read: “The people of Palmerston North have been mislead by Cr G. F. Serrallach's "blatant politicking" on his proposals for a covered-in Lido, and doubts have been raised about the integrity of Palmerston North City Councillors and council staff as a result of them, the council's Wednesday night meeting was told. Several councillors made these complaints, and two said that imputations had since been made that the council "is not interested" in saving money. Cr J. S. Boldt called for Cr Serrallach to apologise for his election promises on the covered pool. Cr R. Leeming said she was "appalled" at the cost of the report the council had had to commission after hearing Cr Serrallach's proposal for a $35,000 roof for the Lido. Especially as the actual cost revealed by the report was far in excess of that figure. Cr Serrallach's "Milan Brych-type Brych- proposals" had raised the hopes of citizens, and "blatant politicking" had been involved, she said.”
