Excerpts from the article read: Palmerston North's new director of community services is Mr Alex Clark, from Christchurch. His appointment, plus the appointment of another recreation officer, brings the Palmerston North City Council's community services department up to full strength for the first time in months. Mr Clark who started work in Palmerston North at the end of July, said the department had been operating below strength "because trained recreation officers are very few in number in New Zealand"

The new recreation officer who has just been appointed is Mr Mark Burton. He will be helping the council's present recreation officer. Mr Alec Gage, and Mrs Jenny Darby, a community occupational therapist. Mr Clark, who's done community service work like his present lob in Christchurch was the e Christchurch, was the general manager of a promotional) trade and industry company before he came to Palmerston North.

“He [Clark] replaces the former community services director Mr Mike Smith who is now working at the inner city mission in Wellington.

“The setting up of the Fishbowl operation at the Maori Battalion hall will also be involving his department. Youth workers will be much involved with the operation. Fishbowl won't be а magic answer to all the city's youth problems. It will have to be counterbalanced by a new interest in facilities in the suburbs, particularly for intermediate school age children. [Clark is] concerned especially about the services for the city's old people, as its [sic] possible that some of the services aren't being fully utilised or understood.”
