“Oil Painting Given To Help Telethon”
- Description
-
This image was published in the May 21st, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper with the caption ” Checking over the painting in 2ZA's studio before it goes away for framing are Mr Brian Jennings (seated) and the artist, Mr Richard Ponder.”
The short article read: “An oil painting has been contributed by a New Zealand landscape artist to help raise money for Telethon - and the painting will be sold by Palmerston North radio station, 2ZA, to raise money for the national appeal. The painting was executed by Lower Hutt artist Mr Richard Ponder, and was only completed last week. Mr Ponder last week exhibited 30 of his paintings in Collinson and Cunninghame's. The radio station interviewed Mr Ponder, and later broadcast the resulting talk. Mr Ponder began painting during the radio interview, in the studio, and completed it in the next two days. That painting, which he has entitled "Yesterday, Longburn", is the one which the station will be selling as part of its contribution to Telethon. Mr Ponder had not exhibited in Palmerston North, and said he came here to "spread the gospel" about his work. He has been painting in New Zealand for two years, and before that was a painter in Queensland, Australia, for seven years. Radio announcer Mr Brian Jennings said the painting will be framed and hung at 2ZA's George Street building, so that the public can see it before the Telethon appeal, which will be held on July 1 and 2. He said the painting would probably be auctioned in the days preceding Telethon, either with postal bids or "on air" bidding. This would be just one of the station's contributions towards Telethon - other projects have yet to be finalised, he said. Telethon this year is to aid arthritis sufferers.”
