The two men in the centre, including Thomas Harrison, rhythmically beat the grass using wooden flails. As one flail is in the air the other is beats the grass. Other men carry the cut grass to the threshers in sacking which has wooden sticks sewn along each side so that the bundle of grass can be easily picked up. The scene may be photographed on Thomas Harrison's farm on Pohangina Valley West Road. This photograph is Number 5 in a series of photographs entitled “Grass Seed raising in the Manawatu.
