A group of standard two pupils from Aokautere School wear costumes as part of a teaching unit on Native Americans during term two, 1984. They pose in front of a teepee made from brown paper and sticks. This photo is of historical interest as it reflects the manner in which schools were increasingly teaching their students about non-European cultures, but did not always do so in a respectful, cultural sensitive manner. Aokautere School (formerly known as Fitzherbert East School) was established in 1889.
