Description: These images were taken (but not published) by the Evening Standard on either the 30th or 31st of December 1980. They depicts moments of action from the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield 2-day match between the Auckland and Central Districts women’s cricket teams. The match was drawn.

Central Districts batting talents Rosemary Signal and Lorraine Vincent in action.

A short report from David Ogilvie on day one read: “Central Districts was again in the batting woes, being 89 for nine at lunch against Auckland.

Opener Rosemary Signal looked good in scoring 22 before she cut once too often against Pam Hookway, Chris Leighton hitting 15 in a short time and Lorraine Vincent stayed for more than an hour before being stumped by New Zealand keeper Edna Ryan after over-balancing on the forward stretch.

Sally Groves, the heroine of Central's match-saving effort yesterday, was 12 not out, giving her 58 runs in three innings without being out. She could bat higher.
Short scores Central Districts 89 for nine (S. Gilchrist, 3 for 22; H. Shale, 3 for 20) verses Auckland.”

From New Zealand Cricket: The Hallyburton Johnstone Shield was New Zealand's first women’s domestic competition, and it began in the 1935/36 season. It evolved in 1946/47 to become a robin formatted competition and is still contested today between the six major regions: Northern Districts, Auckland, Central Districts, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago (including Southland).
