Description

The first Palmerston North hospital was opened in 1893, although hospital facilities had been available in the old Government Immigration Barracks from 1880. The opening ceremony took place on 27 Nov 1893. A group of nurses and patients are on the verandah of No. 2 (women’s) ward. It contained five beds and was known as the Wilsher Ward, having been built from money left by a Mr Wilsher.
