Part 3 of 4. Marion Abiss describes her involvement with the Experiment in International Living
It was a global cultural exchange bringing visitors into New Zealand homes
Students and adults stayed with host families for several weeks or a term
The aim was to experience everyday Kiwi life, not just tourism
Families matched students with similar-aged children where possible
Visitors came from countries like the USA, Japan, England and Switzerland
Many were fascinated by New Zealand’s clear skies and natural environment
Hosts shared trips, farming life and local experiences with visitors
Cultural differences were evident, especially in discipline and routines
Japanese visitors were noted for precision, organisation and manners
Hosting was unpaid, but rewarding for both families and guests
Overall it was a valuable learning experience for everyone involved
