“Pot Of Gold Came Just In Time”
- Description
-
This image was published in the October 29th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper with the caption: “Graham holds the piece of paper that's worth $60,000 in one hand, and baby Claire in the other. With him is his wife Monica (holding Christine, aged three) and their son Michael, aged five.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Two Feilding policemen were $30,000 richer after taking out the first prize in Golden Kiwi No. 122. And the man who sold them the ticket was just as surprised - Feilding barber Alex McLeod sold another $60,000 ticket in the lottery only six weeks ago.
The prize money went to Feilding constables Graham Duncan and Richard Smith. For Mr Duncan his half share of the $60,000 pot came just in time. He's just been transferred to Wellington, he and his family have had to buy a house of their own in the capital, they couldn't sell their present house in Feilding - and they have a fourth baby on the way.
Graham's been in Feilding for four and a half years, and has been buying the Golden Kiwi tickets for all that time, but without any major success. He went into partnership with Richard because he and his wife couldn't afford the tickets when they went up to $1 each.”This image forms part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection.
