This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 05 April 1961 "The photograph shows a scale model of the new Maori Battalion Memorial Community Centre to be built near the south-eastern corner of Cuba and David Streets where two houses are being demolished for the construction of the building. It is hoped that work will begin some time in June as tenders will be called for shortly. The approximate cost of the building is £32.000. The architect, Mr. J.G. Scott, is a Māori and is a specialist in ultra-modern buildings. The fourteen carved panels in the front of the model represent the tribal committees in the Raukawa (Wellington) executive committee. They are 9ft by 33 in and will cost £100 each. The central panel, which will cost £400, represents the Rangitāne executive committee. Inside the building will be a memorial plaque to the Māoris who served in World War II."
