A group of fifteen recruits relax amongst tussock grass with a large billy, some hold enamel cups of thick slices of toast. They are probably on a training excursion from the Awapuni Military Camp. This was located at the Awapuni Racecourse and was one of New Zealand’s largest training camps in World War One, including the sole location for training the New Zealand Medical Corps. staff.
