Miss Paterson taught at Palmerston North Girls' High School for 22 and a half years and was deputy principal for the last three years of her career at the school. She also taught at a school in New Plymouth.

St Patrick's School was built in 1916 in Pirie Street. It was a Catholic school and convent. It was demolished in 1994.
