Royal Wanganui Opera House

The Royal Wanganui Opera House was designed by Wellington Architect George Stevenson and commissioned to commemorate Queen Victoria’s reign. It is New Zealand’s last surviving Victorian Theatre and the only theatre in New Zealand to have a Royal Charter.

Constructed as a memorial to the first Mayor of Whanganui, William Hogg Watt. The fountain has been placed in many locations since it was first installed at the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Ridgway Street in 1881. In 1906, the fountain was moved to Cooks Gardens. It was later kept in Council storage until being shifted to Queens Park from the 1930s until it was relocated to its original location in 1993.

The concert, produced by Chamber Music Wanganui, featured Johnson's original compositions performed by the quartet of Jonathan Crayford (piano), Tom Callwood (bass), Cory Champion (drums) and Lucien Johnson (tenor and soprano saxophone). There was one alteration to the programme with "Spooning" following "Morning Song". The quartet performed the previous evening in Wellington and will tour New Zealand later in July.
