NAC 'Dakota' aeroplane, Palmerston North

National Airways Corporation's aircraft 'Popotea' was taken over from the RNZAF in June 1947, was modified and refurbished and introduced to the fleet as a DC-3. After being withdrawn from service with NAC on in 1965 it was operated by Airland (NZ) Ltd from 1966, then by Fieldair from 1978. It was withdrawn from service in 1981 and deregistered in 1983. After being used used as a restaurant and bar at Miramar near Wellington from 1985, it was dismantled and the nosesection is now with the Sport and Vintage Aviation Society at Masterton. The National Airways Corporation was the national domestic airline of New Zealand from 1947 until 1978 when it amalgamated with New Zealand's international airline, Air New Zealand.
