The Governor General of New Zealand, Sir Bernard Freyberg talking with Mrs Ann Jacques of the Polish Army League, at the opening of an exhibition of art works gifted to New Zealand. Two people from the Pahiatua Polish Children's Camp look on. The gifts were sent to the Polish Army League, based in Palmerston North, by the soldiers of the Carpathian Division in Italy. They were made by Polish soldiers to give to New Zealand as an expression of their heartfelt gratitude for New Zealand's treatment of the Polish children refugees and appreciation of the great friendship shown to the soldiers through the sending of correspondence and parcels, during World War Two. The exhibition was held at the C M Ross department store (now the Palmerston North Central Library).
