This view is of the conversion of the former tearooms on the second floor, and shows the original rosewood panelling being exposed. This was a feature of the tearooms, but has now been removed.

Looking across Main Street, towards the construction of the new Administration Building of the Palmerston North City Council. This was part of a new Civic Complex on the former Railway land in Palmerston North. Stage 2 was begun in December 1975 and was completed in 1979. The complex also included shops, underground parking and a convention centre.

Book chain, transporting books to the new Palmerston North City Library

A human book chain was used to transport some of the books from the former Public Library to the new Library on the opposite side of The Square. Children and Army personnel helped to transport books. The purple cushion was made by Tessa Burt, a staff member, to carry the first book across into the new Library.

Souvenir trowel from 'topping off ceremony' at the Palmerston North City Library Building

A 330mm long engraved stainless steel trowel with a wooden handle. The trowel was used for the topping off ceremony to mark the completion of the major building structures in the construction of the present Palmerston North City Library Building on The Square in the former Rosco department store premises. The trowel comes with a glass fronted wooden display box. The engraving on the trowel reads 'Presented to his worship MAYOR PAUL RIEGER to commemorate topping off of the PNCC Library and George St Development by Mainzeal Property and Construction 15/9/95'.
