It was reported in the Manawatu Standard that Local Government Minister, Graham Bassett, commented that Sir Joseph Wards could not have started the town clock originally in 1906, as the clock tower plaque stated. Ian Matheson, City Archivist, 'solved the mystery'. The clock was started by Mrs W T Wood, wife of the Palmerston North Member of Parliament at the time, 9 November 1906. The plaque has since been amended to record this.

In 1953 Arthur Hopwood gifted the city of Palmerston North £10,000 to build a Clock Tower in The Square to hold the clock and chimes removed from the Post Office after the 1942 earthquake. The Returned Services' Association wrote to the Mayor expressing concern at the choice of the 'band rotunda' site for the erection of the Clock Tower, due to its close proximity to the War Memorial. The Clock Tower was completed in 1957, on the contested site.

Mr A Cranson, watch and clock repairer of 46 The Square, maintained the town clock in the Clock Tower from 1963. In 1970 he wrote to the PNCC, to inform them that he was to raise his weekly charges for maintenance from 75 cents to $2.50 per week. This was agreed to by Council.

In 1953 Arthur Hopwood, of Arthur Hopwood Hardware, gifted the city of Palmerston North £10,000 to build a new tower in The Square, to hold the clock and chimes formerly in the Post Office. He wrote and thanked the Palmerston North City Council for accepting his offer. The Clock Tower was completed in 1957.

Reserves Committee recommendation that PNCC approve the Lions Club Christmas project to decorate the Palmerston North Clock Tower

In 1968 the Lions Club of Manawatu sought approval to light the Clock Tower in The Square in the form of a Christmas tree, funded by local commercial organisations. The Reserves Committee of the Palmerston North City Council recommended that this be approved.

In reply to Mr J J Coffey, 5 Ada Street, Palmerston North, suggestion that the Governor General be invited to open the new structure the Council thanked him but said would be a quiet ceremony due to the health of Arthur Hopwood.
