In October 1945 the urgent need to house returned servicemen's families and others in need of accommodation saw an intermediate camp of 10 temporary units (with 21 tenants) set up at the Showgrounds for six months. The next step was to build a longer-term transit camp based in Hokowhitu and the first families moved to the Hokowhitu site late 1945. The housing consisted of surplus buildings from the army camp. The transit camp finally closed in 1959.
