An Early View of Ferguson Street

This early photograph of Ferguson Street was taken between Albert Street and Victoria Street, looking towards Fitzherbert Avenue. Ferguson Street was named after Alexander Ferguson, Mayor of Palmerston North 1885-86, and a Borough Councillor 1878-1884 and 1888. A Scotsman by birth, he came to New Zealand on the 'Star of Germany and arrived in Palmerston North about 1878. He bought George Snelson's store which he ran as a grocery and hardware business in The Square. Downed Telegraph Poles, Foxton Line

Downed Telegraph Poles, Foxton Line

A severe storm which crossed the North Island on 2 February 1936 caused substantial damage in and around Palmerston North, one of the hardest hit towns. Houses lost roofs, chimneys were blown over, the grandstands of the A and P Association, the Awapuni Racecourse and the sportsground were demolished, and a man was killed when he was blown off his roof as he tried to repair it. This photograph shows the damage to the power lines of the town. The Manawatu Evening Standard (3/02/1936) described the aftermath: "The worst damage of all to the electricity service was seen along Foxton Line, opposite Monrad Street. Starting just beyond Botanical Road and finishing at the turn off to the racecourse, sixteen of the poles carrying the main transmission line were flat on the roadway and tangled lines everywhere."

The clock and chimes were put into storage until reinstated in a clock tower in The Square, which was completed in 1957. The Post Office building is now used as a restaurant and bar.
