Unveiling of the Palmerston North War Memorial, The Square

The cenotaph, constructed 1926, was unveiled by the Prime Minister of the day Mr J F Coates. The memorial, a copy of one found in Folkstone, England, was for the men who died in the First World War, (WWI) and as such faced north-west towards the battlefield of Flanders. The figure represented the spirit of mother-hood watching where her sons were sleeping, and she has a wreath of remembrance and cross of sacrifice. Subsequent war dead have been added to the list of names on the monument.
