The Manawatu Rugby Team defeated Auckland 12 to 10 on Saturday 21 August 1976, to win the Ranfurly Shield. Carrying the shield are the captain Duncan Hales (left) and Mark Wright. The Ranfurly Shield has only been won by the Manawatu team once, though is was successfully defended 13 times.
