Several groups of people can be seen enjoying the facilities offered in The Square in this postcard. The image looks towards the corner of Rangitikei Street. This fountain is in western quadrant - it is shown here before the Coronation monument for Edward VII was added on top (1925). To the left is the three-storied brick Clarendon Hotel - constructed in 1904, after fire had destroyed the earlier wooden hotel. Mr H Baker was the Proprietor. In 1927 the building was converted into shops and offices, and the top-storey of the building was removed after the 1931 Napier earthquake. It subsequently became the Bank of New Zealand. This building is now the Commercial Union and Westside Buildings that contains @ The Hub (a student hostel) and the Rangitikei Convenience Store. In the middle of the photograph is the Bank of New Zealand. This building was constructed in 1915, to replace the former BNZ on the corner of Fitzherbert Avenue and The Square. It was demolished to make way for a new BNZ in 1988. It is now occupied by retail stores.
