The "Lion's Den" in The Square

The "Lion's Den" in The Square

This photograph comes from an article in the Manawatu Evening Standard (16 September 1972) regarding the contributions made by the local combined Lions Clubs to the Centenary Square Project. Along with other public works, a lit fountain was built to create a night time space for The Square. Darkened by the overhanging trees, the area was anecdotally known as a dangerous place to be after dark. It was removed in the mid-2000s as part of an initiative to make The Square safer. The original caption read, "The area is also a night-time place. The tranquil atmosphere of the surroundings are emphasised in a thoughtful girl beside the fountain. Lights at the basement of the water jets reflect a thousand droplets as they splash towards the cobblestone fountain base. In the background, the lighted cross on top of the clock tower pierces the night."
