The Shops in The Square in the 1960s

This photograph shows the line of shops that once sat between the corner of Broadway Avenue and the Square through to Main Street East. Visible are: Gerrands; Deluxe Shoes; Radio and Electric House; Manhattan Ltd; Coopers for Shoes; The Farmers. Apart from the building on the far left, these buildings are all still standing (2014).Further down on the corner of Main Street East and The Square is the old Post Office. The opposite corner is the Public Library. The old library building is now the Square Centre - housing office space and a cafe. The City Library moved to its current home in the old CM Ross building in 1996.
