A View of the Square - Looking Towards Broadway Avenue

The Lakelet was constructed in October 1909. It was the main feature of the last quadrant of The Square to be developed by the Beautifying Society. The Hopwood Clock Tower was built in 1957, built with a donation from Arthur Hopwood. The clock chimes contained therein were moved from the Post Office tower when it was demolished as an earthquake risk after the 1940 earthquake. The Hopwood Clock Tower has experienced a number of changes including the removal of the original sound shell at the base of the tower (just visible in this photograph) in the early 1990s and the addition of a cross. During 2007 the Hopwood Clock Tower was refurbished and it is now topped with a lantern style cross. The T&G (Australasian Temperance and General Mutual Life Assurance Society) Building (topped with a clock tower to the right of the Hopwood Clock Tower) was built in 1938.
