Looking down on The Square from Church Street side, with Rangitikei Street leading off, on the top, far left hand side. The marble statue of Te Peeti Te Awe Awe is in the front centre of the image. Te Peeti Te Awe Awe (c1820-1884), a chief of the Rangitane tribe, was involved with negotiations and the sale of Maori Land for the opening up of the Manawatu for pakeha settlement. The statue of was installed in The Square, Palmerston North, in January 1907. Also visible is Woolworths (corner of Broadway Avenue and The Square), the Ladies' Rest (art deco structure, centre) and the T&G tower (The Australasian Temperance and General Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd (T&G) building, designed by A and K Henderson in the distinctive 'house' style developed by the firm and built 1938).
