Monuments in the Square

Note the dome of the Hotel Midland (centre background). Visible in this photograph: [1] Te Awe Awe Statue, erected by Rangitane Tribe in 1907. [2] Band Rotunda, built 1907 and demolished 1956. [3] War Memorial, unveiled 7 February 1926, also called the Victory Statue. [4] King Edward VII memorial was put up to commemorate the coronation of King Edward in August 1902. It was originally placed where the Victory Statue now stands (at the foot of the Hopwood Clock Tower), but it was moved in 1925 to the fountain near DIC to make way for the victory statue. It has also rested where the PNCC Carpark is now located. It currently resides in the corner of the Square nearest to Broadway Avenue and has been turned into a fountain.
