A View of The Square from All Saints Church

This photograph of The Square was probably taken from All Saints Church and looks north. The corner of Broad Street (now Broadway Avenue) is centre left. On the far left side is the corner of Main Street East where Palmerston North's fourth Post Office sits (built 1905-1906). The Band Rotunda in the photograph was the second one to sit in The Square - the first was removed to the Victoria Esplanade in 1907. Behind that is the train line that once ran through The Square. It was removed after the completion of the Milson Deviation made it redundant in 1959. There is a wonderful view of the Lakelet, also known as Butterfly Lake because of its unique shape. Next to it is one of two cannons that once sat in The Square. They were removed in 1939. See Research File A175/72/2 in the Ian Matheson City Archives, City Library for more information.
