Looking across the Rose Garden to Church Street East

Postcard looking across the rose gardens in The Square to the buildings of Church Street East. Pegden's furniture was established in 1882 by Messrs Simmonds and Pegden, and the building shown in the postcard opened in July 1900. The Crown Studio's (photographers) and the grocer shop are beside the PDC (Premiere Drapery Company), established 1915. Beside the PDC is the Club Hotel. The statue in the middle of the rose garden is of Te Peeti Te Awe Awe (c1820-1884), a chief of the Rangitāne tribe. He was involved with negotiations and the sale of Maori Land for the opening up of the Manawatu for pakeha settlement. The marble statue was installed in The Square in 1907.
