This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 28 January 1961: "Rising before 5.30 a.m. every day is not every girl's ideal way of starting the day, but for Miss Kathy Haig, of Ihakara, it is common practice and she enjoys her open air life to the full. She is one of New Zealand's few land girls; she works on her father's farm. Land girls, once common during the war years and in the United Kingdom, are few in preent day New Zealand farming. Miss Haig's unusual work, for a girl, includes helping her father milk 36 Friesian cows twice a day, helping her mother in the house and preparing teas for the haymakers. Apart from these tasks are many others to be completed round the property to leave her father free for the heavier farm duties. Dressed in overalls and a check shirt, Miss Haig is seen with her father, Mr. T.R. Haig, at the Levin A. and P. Show. Just before this picture was taken her only entry for the day, a heifer calf, had gained third place."
