-
This image was taken by the Evening Standard on the 25th of February 1979 but was not published on the. It depicts a moment of action from a charity cricket match in aid of Barnardos.
The caption on another published image read: “AUDREY GREEN, of Radio 2ZA, had an armchair ride when she went out to bat in the charity cricket match at Fitzherbert Park yesterday. Audrey, who ‘played’ for the Showbiz All Stars, is carried on to the field by two well-dressed members of the opposing team, All Blacks Gary Knight (right) and John Loveday. The N.Z. Sportsmen's XI proved too strong (fractionally) for the Showbiz All Stars, although Showbiz captain Bruce Taylor claimed his team had won convincingly. Big-hitting Central Districts batsman Jock Edwards thumped several sixes for the Showbiz team, while Bill Skelton looked as if he could do have been in rare form with the bat if he managed to get it to the ball. Former Commonwealth Games 10,000 metres champion Dick Tayler never looked in any trouble in his innings and was O not out at stumps. This was the second time he had been Involved in cricket. The first was when he ran into cricket nets in the dark when being chased by a Timaru Boys High master who had come across Tayler and other boys smoking. The charity cricket match was the first of its kind played in Palmerston North, and raised almost $600 for Barnardos New Zealand. About 1500 people attended.”
