"Gorge Smash" [Jet Boat Accident]

Description

This series of images were taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 22 September, 1978. The article details a mid-river collision in the Manawatū Gorge during the Manawatū River stage of the 1978 CItizen Watch Jet Boat Marathon. The two boats that collided were Campbell Wilkie's "The Ugly" and Hilton McLachlan's "Ruffian" (with Ross Baker and Charles Hughes as crew). A third boat skippered by Bryan Harvey sustained damage whilst avoiding the collision. The photograph of P. Bayens' boat included in the article was not found with the negatives.
