This bronze portrait bust was made by Thomas Vincent Johnston in 1962. It depicts the politician Sir Walter Nash (1882-1968), who was: Member of Parliament for Hutt 1929-1968; President of the Labour Party, 1935-1936; Minister of Finance and Customs in the first Labour Government, 1935-1949; and Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs during the second Labour Government, 1957-1960.

T. V. Johnston was the Head of the Art Department at Palmerston North Teachers' College between 1956 and 1966. The bust was presumably photographed while on loan to an exhibiton, but the specific occassion is not known.
