Description

Whakarongo Railway Station was opened on Stoney Creek Road 9 March 1891, on the line through to the Manawatu Gorge. It was closed to passenger service in the 1960s, and the station was sold and demolished in 1967. The remaining goods yard was officially closed to all traffic in 1983. The naming of the Station as Whakarongo by local Rangitāne effectively brought about the change of the name of the district from Stoney Creek to Whakarongo.
