Fishing was a favourite pastime of Peter and Maria Bares. Peter (Greek name, Panayioti Ververis) was born in Greece and emigrated to New Zealand in 1930. His wife Maria (nee Vounatsos) came to New Zealand from Greece in 1939, to marry Peter. They had three children, Mercina, John and Jim and lived in Wellington until moving to Palmerston North in 1945. Peter made all his own fishing lines and nets and the whole family would go to beach (Foxton, Waikanae and Paekakariki) each Sunday in summer to drag nets and fish with long lines which Peter would spend hours baiting and sending out by kite. Peter Vounatsos was the brother of Maria. Further information can be found on the Bares family and businesses at IMCA A175/381-R.
