This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 26 January 1961: "The temple of the Ratana religion overflows and many followers hear the service from the surrounding lawns. The manner in which over 3000 members of the Ratana Church, drawn from many parts of New Zealand, yesterday celebrated the 42nd anniversary of the first beginnings of their new organized Christian faith to replace tohungaism could probably serve as an object lesson to many pakeha communities setting out on a similar abitious undertaking. The day has a special religious significance for all visitors to, and members of, the Ratana Pa near Turakina. That significance was in evidence throughout the day in the orderly and unihibited behaviour at church worship, feasting, sports contests and band competitions, and in the friendliest of good humour for all."
