“Super Sid Going… And Going”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the August 13th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption: “Surrounded by "Super Sid books, the man himself autographs another copy for Mrs Ngaire Cheetham.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Sid Going's book "Super Sid" is going... and going. After only being launched on July 14, the book is reputedly this year's best seller, with 30,000 copies sold in the first fortnight. And Sid's signing almost every one of them personally. The famous former All Black half back came to Palmerston North (on July 27) to autograph more copies of his book during a nation-wide tour to promote the publication.
Writer’s cramp hadn’t set in, but Sid was looking tired – he had signed 400 copies of his book in two hours in Bennett’s bookshop, as well as meeting supporters, friends, or people who just wanted to say they had shaken his hand. There were babies to smile at and old ladies to talk to.
And there were appointments to keep his brief one-day visit to the Palmerston North area involved a visit to Freyberg High School, appearances at Bennett's, a session at radio 2ZA, a visit to Whitcoulls, a brief stop at the Rugby Museum, another book-signing session at Carthews' in Feilding, similar exercise in Levin and two more stops in Porirua. And there is a chance he'll be coming back to Palmerston North in August for still more promotion work. When he runs out of appointments- he's got 250 special sessions to get through first.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
