This image was published in the August 27th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper with the caption: “Mr Stonehouse and the chairman of the City Council's Community Development Committee, Cr Maureen Bird, studying the Japanese version of the book. The library comes under the committee's jurisdiction.”
An excerpt from the article read: “A book written originally in Palmerston North has just been translated and printed in Japan. And several other translations of ‘The Evolution of Intelligence’ are under way, around the world., the book's author, Mr David Stonehouse, told the "Tribune" last week. He had just received a copy of the Japanese version of his book, and presented it to the Palmerston North Library as one way of acknowledging the assistance given by the library in writing the book.
Other material was obtained from Massey's own library. Now the senior lecturer in education at Massey University, Mr Stonehouse took six years to write the book, He began it when he was at the University of Queensland, just before he took up his Massey appointment. He hadn't been to Palmers ton North before his Massey appointment, but says one of the main things that has influenced his stay in the city has been the public library. He hadn't encountered such a good public library, with such a wide variety of specialised topics, in a city this size before.
Besides the library's assistance to him, it was also popular with his family. He said the library played a valuable role in providing material for his book - and the book has lead [sic] to him being invited to attend Oxford University in England. He intends going there next year to make suggestions for research projects into the specialised field dealt with in his book and to see how far researchers have progressed there.”
…
“Ethology, the study of instinct, has only really go under way in the last five years, he added. His own book was first published in London in 1974. It works out in detail how man came to have intelligence.”
…
“Asked if it was the sort of book that anyone could read, or whether it was strictly for research and reference material, Mr Stonehouse said it would be readable by anyone who was interested in the field of human behaviour and intelligence. He did not think it would reach world best-seller status, but said other scientific books had achieved1 unexpected world-wide fame It was intended as a research book with practical implications, such as school use for intelligence testing.”
