- Description
-
These images were taken for the April 30th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption “David Poppelwell in action.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Palmerston North radio announcer, David Poppelwell, will lead a party of New Zealand tourists to the United States in September. David is becoming something of a trend-setter for New Zealand radio the station still holds an unofficial "record" record he established last year. In October he did a three-hour broadcast, direct from Los Angeles, for the Palmerston North station. To accomplish this a satellite link up had to be employed.
…
And in September he will be away again- back to the be away again back to the States. But this time as the tour 'escort with a party of "It benefits the radio station and it also benefits the local travel agency." "We chose David as the tour escort because, with his travel experience he's more than competent to head a tour. He also knows the whys and wherefores of international travel, and knows the Los Angeles area very well. David's also built up some very good personal contacts that he will be using to make the tour of more interest. Mr Flyger said radio stations at Hamilton and New Plymouth had recently used their personnel as tour escorts for cruises, but sending a 2ZA announcer with a tour party all the way to the United States is a first for New Zealand radio.”These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
