“Drama, Excitement And Confusion In 6 - Hour Marathon”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the December 3rd, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption: “The winner's flag is up, and circuit promoter Rob Lester (back to camera) moves up to congratulate Neville Hiscock for winning the six-hour race outright. But then Neville told the crowd the victory belonged to his brother, Dave - and that's who the award went to. The confusion was the result of a mix-up in lap scoring.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Last Sunday's Castrol Six-hour Race at Manfeild provided the 8000 spectators with a thrill a minute for the race's entire duration. A field of 59 bikes started at the drop of the flag, at noon, to race their way through to 6 pm. First away and building up an immediate lead was the Suzuki GS1000 of David Hiscock and Neil Chivas (Australia), while crowd favourite Graeme Gosby, three-times previous winner of the event, gradually moved through the field on his Kawasaki ZIR 1000ce to be in the slipstream of the leader when he had to refuel and change riders, after an hour and 10 minutes of racing.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
