This is the second hotel of the same design on the same site. The original hotel, which contained 22 rooms, was built in 1890 by Rimmer and Craven for Thomas Nelson and did not have a balcony. The architect was John Beard. It subsequently burnt down. The publican in 1896 was Thomas Taylor. In 1904, the owner of the hotel was William Siddells and the publican was Owen McKittrick. From 1908 to 1911, the publican was Stuart McClelland.
The sheds beyond the hotel were Hanlon's Livery Stables. Hanlon's also had stables opposite the hotel on Mulgrave Street. The two storey boarding house was where Mrs Hyndman lived for many years. She was a daughter of the pioneer Maunder family.
